School of Environment

Nanjing University was a pioneer in environmental science research and education in China and established School of Environment in 2000. In 2001, its environmental science was approved to be national key discipline. By far, the School of Environment consists of three departments - environmental science, environmental engineering and environmental planning, and has two national key disciplines - environmental science and environmental engineering. In addition, the school has established more than 20 scientific research and education platforms, such as "National key laboratory of pollution control and resource recovery (co-operated with Tongji University)", "National demonstration center for environmental science and engineering education" and "National demonstration center for socio-economic and environmental virtual simulative experiment education", and formed an integrated platform for "scientific research, talent cultivation, technology development and serving the society."

Currently, the school has 150 faculty members, and among them there are 38 professors and 32 associate professors. Since 2000, the school has taken charge of more than 1000 projects on national, provincial and local levels, receiving around 1 billion RMB research funding, and supplied vital knowledge and technical support to solve national as well as local environmental issues.

When confronting the 21st century's most pressing problems, the school is taking bold and innovative approaches to achieve sustainable development. These approaches prioritize the protection of Earth's ecosystems, oceans, and atmosphere as well as the resources circulation mechanisms on the interface between natural and socioeconomic systems. In addition, the school is embracing more interdisciplinary scientific research to address many crosscutting issues.

The school's overarching goal is to help achieve sustainable development primarily by expanding the understanding the nature of the Earth's natural and socioeconomic systems. We work toward this goal through scientific research, education, and practical application of research for solving real-world challenges.
